Seriously. I've recently been rotating Lightning/Puppets in the car after not listening to them for probably almost 10 years. Testament too.
There was a Sheerdogged metal thread awhile back where I debated with a guy that, while Testament was good, he was overrating them, but I feel like a heel now. Their first two albums were soooo much better than I remembered and I remembered liking them quite a bit.
One of my favorite singers barely anyone has heard of, Fates Warning's original vocalist John Arch:

That is teh r341 prog-metal right there. Their first 3 discs plus the first disc with Ray Alder as their singer are amazing. The rest are sort-of hit or miss and kind-of lost the metal edge. Beyond classic, prog is probably my favorite sub-genre of metal, though as I get older I find myself searching less and less for new music, which is sort-of sad, but who has the time! When you're a fan of a sub-genre of a genre that isn't even popular it requires research. At least Pandora helps me out a little bit...

No kidding, man. I'm at that point now.
I literally have never listened to any Iron Maiden album past Seventh Son of Seventh Son.
And I just saw them in concert last night. It was pretty awkward when all the material was from the last ten years.

I am lucky enough to have been to a Maiden show twice; I've never seen any band put so much effort into a show before. Once was with Dio and the other time was with Queensyche & Rob Halford's "solo" band Fight. It was difficult to not cream my pants. :p

Your first example was a crappy Metallica song off a crappy Metallica album. So, I apologize if I misunderstood what you were attempting to pass off as wit or a troll job. That said, Check out that list and look into Crowbar, Dying Fetus or Suffocation. There is some good stuff in there.
DEP was really good on Calculating Infinity and earlier but the singer after Dmitri is not really what I am into. And SUNN-O))), who I love, is a bit Drone for most people. You into Stoner or Sludge?

Devin Townsend, more accurately the album Terria, saved my morning.
All hail emperor Devin.
Curiosity killed the cat. But damn it had a blast.

Black Metal is only about vikings, mountains and satan.
P.S. and the better the band plays "black metal" the shittier their music sounds.
