Pilgrim, the reason you can't imbed is because the metal gods are punishing you for a) linking shitty post-Justice Metallica that sounds more like emo alternative crap than metal b) further insulting them by using it as your example of something old. Seriously, unbelievable double-fail there. I'm not trying to rag on you, I'm genuinely concerned and think we need to do an intervention.

    :walk:

I am more than emo these days, thanks to Spain winning the world cup.
The power of light shines deep out of my arse.

Also, with metal, you always have the problem that if you post t3h r34l sh1t,
    people get insulted.

If you post radio metal, someone will always come along and say it's too soft.

Look, I like these here for example, but they make babies cry:

YouTube- Frontside - Naszym Przeznaczeniem Jest Płonąć

YouTube- Cradle Of Filth - Babylon AD

    YouTube- SONIC SYNDICATE - Powershift

YEAH, one of the videos is a trap.

Also, I meant to post something from "PAIN", but WTF has his style declined.

Well, older thrash is about as heavy as I can deal with. I like singers not screamers (not to say some well-placed screams for emphasis aren't good), but that's personal taste.

IMO, it's really not about being hard/soft, because metal is more than just rock music played extra loud and aggressively. It's a genre, like all genres, with it's own themes & conventions. Metal is mostly about a high degree of technical proficiency and over-the-top themes; it's romantic in a literary sense and deals with grandiose themes (i.e. triumph) that no other genre can do except classical & opera.

Put it to you like this, compare the heaviest of Metallica's newer material with softer songs from their older material such as Fade to Black or Sanitarium. One is loud rock music, the other is more subdued metal.

That Sonic Syndicate song for example...where the hell was the solo?! The breakneck shifts in tempo?! Instead of playing the same basic verse-chorus-verse song structure except with screaming and having videos with chains and guns to look like a badass, demonstrate your badassery (in a live manner lol). Compare to a band like, say, Slayer that was as aggressive and loud as **** (or even bands like Morbid Angel that push into cookie monster vocals territory which I dislike personally), but they still demonstrate a lot of genuine technique at the same time.

God I feel so old suddenly. :(

P.S. That Cradle of Filth song had some decent moments though (but wru guitar solo?!?!). I never tried listening to them before because they looked too much like Marilyn Manson, but they're better than I expected them to be.

I enthusiastically support the "post-Justice Metallica" pomerium Maofas cited.

AND also the 70s protometal stuff. When I finally got to listen to Led Zep and DP, coming from a bare 80s metal experience, I was amazed at how "they did it all before!1" , especially the drumming parts. It's all there!

How can I contribute? lemme see...

an instrumental quickie. Not classic material, but the first that came to mind right now.

YouTube- Exodus - A Call to Arms

**** you, Pilgrim. You should know better than to think St. Anger is a good song.

But now it's time for some of the extreme stuff.

    Black metal:
    YouTube- Mayhem - Necrolust

    YouTube- Immortal - Tyrants

    YouTube- Nachtmystium "Bleed For Thee"

    Death metal:

    YouTube- Carcass - Heartwork

YouTube- Cannibal Corpse - I Will Kill You

YouTube- Death - Voice Of The Soul

YouTube- Autopsy - Torn From The Womb

And nobody thought to put up some Megadeth? For shame.

YouTube- Megadeth - Rust In Peace... Polaris

YouTube- Megadeth - Tornado Of Souls (Lyrics)

I've tried to like the "classic" metal growl vocals. Can't. To me it just sounds retarded and slightly constipated. The music minus vocals is usually kick-ass though.

Swedish act with a more melodic bent (running-music for me):

YouTube- In Flames - Crawl Through Knives

Classic stuff (R.I.P. Darrell - genius guitarist):

YouTube- Pantera - Cowboys From Hell

Metal? Dunno. Still sore from monday's judo, oddly fitting title:

YouTube- Drowning Pool - Bodies (Let The Bodies Hit The Floor)

    Regards,
    Lars
