‘Free-range’ parents plan to file lawsuit after police pick up children

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/...29e_story.html
A couple of months after Danielle and Alexander Meitiv were found responsible for “unsubstantiated neglect” for letting Rafi, 10, and Dvora, 6, walk home from a park close to where they live in downtown Silver Spring, they gave the children permission to do it again.

Responding to a call from a citizen, police collected the children and took them to CPS in Montgomery where, 5 1/2 anxious hours later, they were reunited with their parents.
Fucking seriously a 10 year is certainly capable of being 3 blocks away from home.

    Snow ? LOL !

My kids walk a mile down a country road from the bus stop to get to their driveway. There are kids all over the neighborhood around here, walking downtown to go to the park, the skate partk, getting a soda at the gas station(s), riding bikes, going fishing, etc. etc.

My 10 year old disappeared with a turkey call, a bottle of water, and a knife for 10 hours one day at his Mom's house. He was practicing calling them and scouting out hunting location. Now that's a "free range kid", LOL !

I listen to the radio in the morning before work, heard about this again recently.

They had on an "expert" that noted some states have laws to wit the age of kids who can be left unattended. Went into a whole psychological spiel it.

I gotta laugh, my folks left me alone with my BB then later pellet gun when I was under 10 years old. I definitely thinned out the bird and squirrel population in the neighborhoods in which I lived. The cops would wave at me as I walked down the sidewalk with my Benjamin pump pellet gun. And that was in the "Country Club" section of Wichita Falls, Texas. Lots of live oak trees, plenty of squirrels.

I'm sure somebody will check, but Wichita Falls wasn't/isn't a small town.

Anyway, I hope the parents are prepared for a big battle. At least the law firm is representing them pro bono...

I grew up a lot more suburban but you know but I was taking myself too and from school (further than that park) walking or riding my bike to friends houses. Just hanging about or going to the local park. I was certainly a "latch key" kid. It was all perfectly acceptable and safe. Of course this was before the age of cell phones.

So I find this sort of thing to be so ridiculous to a point of absurdity.

Yeah, my wife was telling me her Mom used to send her to the store to buy cigarettes...she was 9 or 10 years old.

Hell, I used to buy them out of vending machines for myself when I was in junior high. I'd leave home, walk half a mile to the drug store...and buy cigarettes !

When I was a kid, a friend and I were scooped up by railroad cops for walking on the tracks for several miles. They searched us and found pocket knives, half-burned flares we picked up, and a porno mag we found on the tracks. I don't think our parents were ever contacted.
