Vietnam has many styles.

Vo Tu Do: (vaw too yaw) Like muay thai except a lot more elbows
Vo tay son/vo binh dinh: central mountains style, lots of elbows
Ki cong nu thuat: Grappling style
Ho ba chun: tiger with crippled leg, based on diagonal movements
Kim ke: golden cock style, from man with same name, based on bird like movements
vovinam and cuong nhu: recent "eclectic" POS styles
Do vhat: vietnamese wrestling in water

I studied at a vietnamese school and can answer any questions.

Interestingly enough, Uncle Vin called his system vovinam, Vietnamese Kung fu. However, looking at you list, it sounded as though we did more Vo tay son or Ho ba chun. We tended to use elbows and knees a lot as well as a lot of tiger crane work. So I am not sure if what he taught was specifically Vovinam or if he just used a more popular name to describe what he was teaching. Thanks for the info.

If it was almost all elbows it was definetely binh dinh. If it was binh dinh with KB movement, bags and sparring it was vo tu do.

If it was a strange three part diagonal step with the hands changing position at the end of each step it was Ho Ba Chun.

And the correct name for generic viet MA would be Vo Thuaat Viet.

PS: Who is your uncle vin? Do you call him by Bak Vin or Thay Vin or Suphoo Vin?

I personaly called him Uncle Vin. He was not my uncle by blood. I don't recall what my friends called him, but they were blood relatives. I basicly grew up in their house because my mom worked a lot when I was younger and so I was always hanging out with them and their mom always called me their adopted son (I can't remember the vietnamese name off the top of my head. I will look to see if I can find my old letters from when I used to write to them). Anyway beause of my relationship with them, Uncle Vin began to teach me.
