I'm aware that Judo and Kyokushin have kata--I trained in Judo for four years, and still use it in conjunction with my karate, and I know and have sparred with Kyokushin karateka. I am also not saying that there is anything wrong with sport-focused arts, so no, I am not bringing up the "dead horse" with the intention of beating it. All I said was that I see value in kata, although not all of the techniques and concepts carry over into sparring (at least not for me), and that most arts that are sport-focused (specifically sport-fighting-focused) don't tend to focus on kata and probably won't be convinced that they should because they find value in what they are already doing. I don't see what gets people so upset about that?

Weird because this is the dead horse you beat before your current correction:
Yes, if we believe the history, they were designed to kill another opponent whether it was on the battlefield or in the street. It's funny because war games and competition has existed in the military FOREVER. It's funny how, in the 20th century, that this has all been forgotten. Funnier still, is that it was during and after World Wars that competition is removed from training..But the techniques in kata were not developed for fighting a trained opponent in a ring, so most of them are not ideal for sparring. The hood mentality is crippling disease, that attacks your nervous system. It makes you nervous of the system. Gangsters and hood rats are especially susceptible to this growth stunting mentality. The hood is where I'm from, but it's not what I am. When this guy talks, I listen.
Some people find value in kata. Some people don't.
Based on a preponderance of video evidence, there is no doubt that some people waste their time performing (sloppy) kata. There is also substantial evidence that snapping your joints to their limit and back over extended periods of time and with no resistance is not good for them.
Does that mean that everyone who performs kata does so in an useless manner that is also destructive to their joints? No, it does not.
The world is neither black, nor white. Someone can find usefulness in kata without losing sight of what actually works in an altercation. If you do not test yourself against the unknown, how can you truly know if the tools you possess actually work? -

That's too hard. The issue, for me, is the contradiction. Damn near every butt-hurt form complainer always makes a dig at sport arts.
When this doesn't happen there is actually productive discussion on both sides.
Does jump rope give you an actual fighting technique? No.
Forms done in a similar fashion have an equal benefit in my eyes.
No, I'm not going to explain. No, I did CMA and tend not to agree with VM's or patfromlogan's assessment of their style's forms. Doesn't mean either of us are right or wrong. Yes, people can understand why people do forms, even if the do only sport artsThe hood mentality is crippling disease, that attacks your nervous system. It makes you nervous of the system. I guess I'm still confused as to what is wrong with what I said--I never said that combat sports don't work for self defense, only that kata doesn't work well for combat sports. You're saying that I'm making a dig at sport arts, when I did no such thing. Kata-focused arts certainly have a different approach to training from sport-focused arts, but that isn't an insult to either one.

Poomsae are codes
Forms in the martial arts seem irrellivent, and useless nowadays to many ppl. When im asked y I do forms, I cannot answer the question effectivly because the level of knowledge of the person asking is not high enough to reach the answer I give them. So I can either teach them other facts that can help them see the answers that I give them, or provide the answer that they cannot percieve. Forms contain codes for combat strategy that must be deciphered with the deeper self, and then givin to the mind to clairify, and test. Forms contain foundational movements that branch into techniques, and applications not just one move being trained for one purpose. a wicked man cannot decipher a form because his mind is not aligned with the universe that the form is molded in conformity to. the foundational movements transition into fighting with weapons, they have lethal, and nonlethal applications, the gap is bridged between defense, and offence. Etc. . . The best I can tell somebody about forms is that they are codes, then once deciphered, they are textbooks. They are not applications, but they are instructions on how to apply, hidden from the world. They dont teach u how to use ur weapons, they teach u that u are a weapon. It is hidden from even many experts though, so how do I tell somebody who is just attempting to debunk the practice of forms? Questions/ comments feel free
