Surely if you had that much confidence in the efficacy of your training then you wouldn't feel the need to defend it against these meatheads.

I liked learning Kata, but it taught me next to nothing about fighting, Karate gets a lot of grief around here, much of it justified.

Damn it, I missed the "OMG my teacher has the real teaching, many do not."

Actually, going back and reading what I said in the almost-four-years-old original thread was interesting for me, as I've since moved away from kata hate again. Now I just kinda like doing them.

    Explain how Kata training works

Have you sparred or fought against MT, Kyokushin, Boxing or other full-contact arts?

Have you been able to use things of the kata in kumite?

Try to convince me you will see I did Karate, Kyokushin Karate a full-contact style and I grew desillusioned with the Kata and traditional stances when doing MT they did not help me save my face

Maybe I did not train Kata well enough

So tell me please how do kata? and whyz and howz

Where do you prioritize kata training? Is it the most important thing to practice? Second most important? Third?

I'm honestly curious. Because I imagine there are a lot of people here who don't have a problem with kata, it is just lower on the priority list. Below partner drilling, S&C, sparring,etc...

    Who has the time?

Wow, that was an angry post!

I am a karateka, currently training in Shorin-Ryu, and I happen to enjoy kata and find great value in bunkai practice. Do I apply it in contact sparring? Some of it, yes! But the techniques in kata were not developed for fighting a trained opponent in a ring, so most of them are not ideal for sparring. Do I expect people who train in arts like Muay Thai, Judo or Kyokushin to find value in kata? Nope! If they found value in kata they would be practicing it, and because they find value in their current training there is almost no chance of convincing them that value exists in kata.

both Kyokushin and Judo have Kata actually

Its just that Kyokushin places much less focus on it, instead only doing it for the gradings and such

For example: Point sparring styles Uechi Ryu and Shito Ryu

Kata practiced daily and usually the main focus of the class (1 hour of kata is not unusual)

    Kyokushin were I trained

Kata for more than a year was only practiced OUTSIDE THE CLASSES, now its done sometimes when a grading is near

Main focus was Kihon, combos, conditioning and Sparring

Ahhh the sport dead horse rears its ugly head. There are plenty of competition schools that do "Kata."

I actually enjoy Judo and all it offers. I just don't tend to get all pissy about it. I don't give a **** about hidden things and secrets deeply buried under layers of pretentious butthurt. I just study and train for my benefit without a care in the world of how you wish to train. Please go punch and kick some air with my assurance that it does not matter to me at all.
