Not having it!!!!
I am doing Judo, and it divides between Recreational and Competative Judo but there is a huge overlap. We have senior citizenes coming out to train, and they have the option of opting out of Randori, especially when confronted by yellow belt goons, supplementing there MMA and BJJ training.
It may take longer to get a belt, and so it should, but to ask the Browns belt seniors to step in the comp or GTFO is embarrising, and loses the point of Judo in the first place.
What is the point of them training competatively for a comp, when the odds of them finding anyone in there age bracket is NIL. They coach, ref, weigh in, volunteer comps unlike any of the Competative 2-3 dans do. And they do in fact do Randori when the All-bran and Prune Juice is has them at their finest, and often are quite solid in Newaza.
They are also good for club moral because they have usually lived long enough to not care that they get belts or not. Usually they are the first face that gets you to fall without breaking your arm, and how to do the basics. Why trouble the competetive Judoka black belts for that...?
They aspire to teach, they aspire to better everyone, are concerned about history, rankings, and the health of the club, and they can't get a black belt unless they Shiai?
C'mon.

My sensei is Shiro Oishi, wow, never knew he had a brother, and a quick google search shows he has quite the impressive resume! Cool, learn something new every day. FWIW, my sensei does the same ranking system for adults, white-yellow-green-brown-black, its slightly different for kids, I think, but I'm not sure exactly how. Our dojo is USJF, but iirc from looking at their website, their color system is slightly different. Doesn't worry or bother me either way, I'm a white belt, and hope in 10 years to be a black belt. 'Nuff said. Maybe I'll meet you sometime in the dojo if you ever come back to NYC Cowboy.

That was only as a compromise between mandating someone to compete to get any promotions and having no competition experience necessary at all for black belt promotion.
personally i prefer having competition as completely optional for those who want and letting senior folks train, get promoted and teach. And eventhough i am from the "internet is for porn" generation, i am still not interested in competing any time soon because of school/work/social life/other hobbies.
If i can get promoted to a black belt by doing this for X amount of years, yay, if not, \_/. I settled for Judo because Sambo wasnt available and would be just as glad being perpetually a white belt for that matter.
With that said, just to play devils advocate, doesnt BJJ mandate some competition experience before becoming a black belt, or boxing wanting some ammy record before becoming a coach ? -

Yes, settled, like those homely 6.5/10 girls that will make good wives and mothers, you will live in comfort and be content, and every once in a while have to tell yourself that you are happy, because in reality something is missing.
