Good on you, you have the wherewithal to realise that you've, I'm sorry, been wasting your time...3 years training in BJJ would probably get you to blue/purple, in Judo half way to black.

Even better that you're starting at a Gracie school.

Good luck, and remember: WAAAAX ON, WAAAAAAAAX OFF!!!11!!one

Should go back to the guy you fought and start chain punching him. As a bonus make some Bruce Lee sound effects.

No way on God's green earth you should be a purple belt after 3 years of BJJ...unless you come to the table with incredible wrestling ability or you are just a freak of nature.

OMG I feel for you! I had a friend who is training in "ninjutser". The first time we sparred he tried to do some ninjer reverse kick. I stop hit him in mid air, and he fell on the ground. It was the easiest stop hit EVER. Everything he tried that time didn't work on a resisting opponent. But he still believe in ninjutser. Actually i can't figure out how to snap him out of it. Any suggestions?

I didn't say "you should be a purple belt after 3 years", I said that in around 3 years one could certainly achieve blue belt, possibly purple belt if they had a particular aptitude.

This is a lot like my experience. When I was 15, a school bully got me into Kempo (it was the first cool looking place I found in the phone book, and that's the only reason). I think the sparring helped a bit, but everything else was a complete waste of time. What did it for me was discovering MMA. I watched the original UFCs because they sounded like the real life version of the movie Bloodsport, and everything I knew about fighting changed. I've been training at Gracie Barra for the past 2 years.

There is no magic number...but in general I'd say:

1-2 years as a white belt

3-5 years as a blue belt

Or you could subscribe to the Southpaw method, where you've been a blue so damn long your belt fades to purple naturally. That's how they did BJJ ranks in ancient Japan I hear!
