You can but the thing is, as you know, the RNC is not easy to get. Especially with the gi. To make it worse, Judo rules don't allow crossfacing or touching the opponent's face with your hands. Quite difficult. And besides. You have so many gi chokes available from the back, why would you bother doing a RNC?

Exactly right. Gi chokes are much more versatile than Hadaka Jime (RNC).

(forgive me, sensei but I'm a judo noob and dunno the names)
To back this up, here's what comes off the top of my head from the back:
Bow and arrow, double lapel choke, ezekiel choke from the back, hell you can even do a reverse triangle.

When rolling with chicks, one should always sink the RNC in and whisper "gotcha baby". While she gets prepared for t3h str33ts, you get prepared for t3h courtr00m.

    fights4peace,

    Just to clarify for you:
1.) Ne waza is an integral part of Judo. Ne waza randori is common in judo practice, although the amount and quality varies from school to school.
2.) BJJ/GJJ is a derivative of Judo ne waza, albeit greatly expanded and refined in application, and with it's own set of competition rules
3.) Kosen Judo is not a special style of Judo. Kosen Judo is a special ruleset for Kodokan Judo competitions that originated among elite prep and technical colleges in Japan in the 19 teens/20s. The Kosen rules allow direct entry to ne waza by "pulling guard", and also allow extended time for ne waza. There are still some schools in Japan today that use the ruleset, but it is not widespread.

Hopefully that will clarify the Kosen issue for you.

No need to call me sensei, Ben is fine. My own students do not address me as sensei.

There are a LOT of gi/collar chokes in Judo, and they all exist in BJJ with different names. Example would be, "clock choke" is Okuri Eri Jime.

Reverse triangle is not a gi choke, btw.

I actually meant it's one that "uses" the gi. Is it possible to get it without the gi? I'd imagine it's very difficult to stop the guy from moving to get your legs into position. Meh, I'm a noob in any case

I think Toby Imada pulled one off in Bellator. Or was it Inversed instead?

Yes, it is possible to use sankaku techniques without the judogi...it is done all the time in no gi BJJ, sub wrestling, MMA, etc.

What about using your own gi or belt in attack? Is it legal to choke with belt, provided its still on and is long enough to to use?
