I cant speak for other martial arts, but in traditional sikaran hands are only used for blocking, hence kicks are used for all sorts of purposes, not just for kicking.

But since it was originally used to determine who gets to marry a contested girl, I doubt your mt instructor had that in mind. Maybe it was something that he picked up and thought it would be a useful trick to have in your arsenal.

I've always just heard it called a cut kick. It is usually thrown as a counter to a teep. I throw them all the time and think of them as more of a sweep.

So many names for these thins...sigh.

I've also hear a roundhouse leg kick that you set up to go under your oponents shin check and hit the load bearing leg a cut kick.

Which is also a sweet kick.

    To un-derail,

it's a legit technique, but difficult to pull off. Keep working it in in sparring and see if it fits in your toolbox.

that's pretty much the kick i was talking about, but we were using it for a different purpose.

now that i've seen that, i'll see about working it into my tool box.
previously, that kind of sweep came from me swinging for the fences at their leg, right below their calf.

thank you, that answered my question very well.
