tonight in the striking portion of my mma class, we went over a kick i have never heard of. the cutter or cutting round house. some of the other guys managed to get the knack of it and use it in sparring, but i couldn't seem to do it.
it went like this.
1. start like a normal leg kick with the same foot work
2. bring your knee all the way around for the round kick, but keep turning your hips until your pelvis is pointed at the floor, but your knee is still bent
3. straighten your leg with a bit of a pushing motion, so that your shin slides across their body/leg check. the slide would look like a saw going across a log.
4. plant your foot in front of you instead of bringing it back, and follow up with any appropriate hand strike.
the idea was to push the person's leg check back around to open them up for a second strike or, if they didn't leg check, to push their body back for you to slide into a good position to punch/knee strike. also, the kick is supposed to hurt if done right, but it wouldn't hurt as much as just a regular, well placed round kick.
like i said, it felt amazingly foreign to me and i had never heard of it before.
any insight would be great.
My opinion, based upon your description, is that this is just another example of a "gimmick" move.... The amount of time it would take for you to master this technique could be better spent training on your fundamentals.

If I'm imagining this properly, it sounds like it wouldn't do much damage and leave you really vulnerable to a counter(moving into your opponent with one leg raised? KO plz). Not a tradeoff I'd be willing to make.
I'm kind of confused. It's not the same as kicking, having it checked, and then hooking with your foot? Cause I don't see the purpose of the slide/sawing versus landing it forward

Wait yes it is, kinda I think.
1. step in with lead leg and pivot on ball
2a. begin kick like a head high round but turn it over a little early
2b. causing leg to begin drop, turn knee and hip over even more, extending leg naturally
3. land kick low, on thigh/checking leg with shin.

that's pretty much it. i've never heard of this technique, but it's supposed to push the other person around to a better spot for you to do damage, and it doesn't feel good.

Same. I can't see doing this without unbalancing yourself with the forward "sawing" motion, and if your opponent sees you go for a leg kick and decides to move forward to stuff it with a cross, that's you looking up at the lights because you'll have walked right into his fist with the forward movement.
