    Really, my opinion is to NOT squat without a rack, or at the very least some stands. These are very basic and fundamental routines, with little room for mobility. The back squat is pretty essential, and using substitute movements is just not going to fly.

    Maybe this should be a separate thread but how do dump back squat when you get stuck in the hole and don't have a squat rack?

    EDIT to avoid Trollshido'ing: It's rare that I'd say "dig a hole in the ground instead", but in this case, that's exactly what I'd say. Dig a waist-deep hole and squat out of that instead, because at least then you know your barbell won't roll off of its "stand".

    It's important to remember that those wheelie bins are designed to be easy to tip backwards.

    In the light of your comments I was a bit unsure of how I should proceed with my program, but I ended up using stands (I discovered that what I thought was stands solely for bench press actually could extend quite nicely to fit my height) and doing regular back squats. First time I've done regular squats outside a Smiths machine - felt quite comfy :-)

    I did spend some time messing around with the basic movements for a Power Clean, but reckon I'm better served with waiting until I can get qualified instruction for that bugger.

    Anyhow, thank you for your advice, appreciated.

    Oh, and sorry for slight derail.

    There are plenty of do it yourself options for a squat rack or even a powercage. Ross has one of each in his equipment section.
