As a matter of interest, who actually was the first Westerner to teach MAs in Japan, if not The Seagull?
Had to smile at seeing Seagal in the vicinity of the cage. Thought that this would be the closest we'd ever get.

Seagal was supposedly the first foreigner to run an aikido dojo in Japan. Of course, it was his then-wife's father's dojo ...
A number of foreigners taught Japanese martial arts in Japan before that, although may not have run dojos. Donn Draeger comes to mind. There's an interesting story about Draeger (a legit badass on many levels) schooling a young Seagal in kenjutsu... -
