As a matter of interest, who actually was the first Westerner to teach MAs in Japan, if not The Seagull?

Had to smile at seeing Seagal in the vicinity of the cage. Thought that this would be the closest we'd ever get.

My understanding is that Seagal is a fairly good friend of one of the Black House managers/higher ups. Basically Silva went along with this as a favor to that guy, after Seagal had asked for the chance to "train" Silva.

Holy crap...I've never seen Seagal get knocked down in a movie before! My complaint with Seagal's movies (the good ones) was that he never got touched. Interesting.

    Lu Tze,
I'm assuming you mean Commodore Matthew Perry and not the actor from friends?

Seagal was supposedly the first foreigner to run an aikido dojo in Japan. Of course, it was his then-wife's father's dojo ...

A number of foreigners taught Japanese martial arts in Japan before that, although may not have run dojos. Donn Draeger comes to mind. There's an interesting story about Draeger (a legit badass on many levels) schooling a young Seagal in kenjutsu...
