I watched that several days ago. I frankly found it sort of dull. A lot of "The young people are ignoring the old ways", a few anecdotes about the way things used to be, but somehow I just couldn't get invested in any of the subjects or their collective plight, even though there are clearly compelling stories to be told.

I basically thought that it was historically interesting to hear about the migration of the different styles from China to S.E. Asia.
As far as the 10 years thing goes I agree that it's a little ridiculous; on the other hand I think they are just old school on that point. However, they did have a point about at least spending enough time to get to know a person before teaching them something that will enable them to cause trouble in the old home town. -

I don't even know how "old school" the ten year thing is... because in the old days, when they were teaching people kungfu it was for the purpose of using it sooner rather than later. I'm not sure they had more than a year to prep in most cases.
I'm also not sure that when they were training in the "old days" they had all day and night to train, as farming and other professions called for a lot of commitment already.
Teaching does have its responsibility, which is why I believe that you get close to your students to see where they are at personally before you teach them certain things. Put them in local and national tournaments to keep them humble and give them a positive outlet for their fightingm and all should be well and good, though. That's my opinion on the issue, though others may disagree. -

why's the ten years thing bad?
Why is this such a bad thing? It took my brother quite a few years to become a white-glove, and the folks I knew who got black-belts in Tang Soo Do took about a decade to do so. I know these aren't Chinese, but what about the Chinese martial arts makes this prospect that offensive?
