    Hell yeah! Hell no!
Anyone can lie down on a bed of nails--it takes no training whatsoever.

My high school physics teacher did it at the front of the class, even had someone break a cinder brick on his chest with a hammer.

If they're touting that, you might want to take it as a warning sign.

If he shaved his head and worn a monk robe, it would have been a lot cooler.

If the shaolin monks grew moustaches and wore neckties with short-sleeved shirts they'd be a lot cooler, IMHO.

    Wrong.
They would need to re-enact scenes from either Final Fight, or Streets of Rage.

They would also have to do weekly tributes to Freddy Mercury.

Beyond the gymnastics and flexibility stuff a lot of what they do in their shows involves parlor tricks. The bed of nails is purely down to dispersing body weight over a large area rather than on a single point. The spear on the throat is another trick, placing the tip against the throat they push down making the spear bend, it looks like they are pushing so hard and the guys throat is so tough but the truth is there is no additional force being placed on the throat at all. Also, breaking sticks over arms and legs - yes, some conditioning is necessary to avoid damage but nothing less than what you would get down a proper contact MA. A long stick is broken by hitting the arm closer to the grip, the inertia created at the end of the the stick causes it to break at the point of contact with the arm. It's a nice party trick but that's all - you wouldn't them stopping baseball bats or oak staffs like that. I dislike the fact that in the mdoern world they still use the spoofery of chi powers and false superhuman feats to market themselves.

When I had an interest, about 11 years ago, I ended up finding this guy:

    www.russbo.com

He has some links and information about training at a shaolin wushuguan in china. At the time I emailed to him and received his direct and honest response that:

-my interest in martial arts would not be served there
    - that he and I had nothing in common to talk about

He was honest and sincere in his reply. I was interested in doing what I picture as 'traditional' and what was happening was definitely a recreation and modern.

Best of luck in your journeys.

You are most correct. His site has become WAY more detailed than it was years ago when there was only a 'galaxy backdrop' all over it with a basic format and pictures and his blog.

He was nice enough to be honest with me regarding my interest and his kindness in that regard has always stuck with me.

He even aplogized at the time for '...sounding like being a dick" My first thought was that he was simply being direct, which I appreciated a great deal.

Why was it that you and he had nothing in common to talk about? This seems like a rather strange thing to say.
