Better to take a hit than die, better to block a hit than take it, better to deflect a hit than block it, better to evade a hit than deflect it and finally better to never let the hit be thrown.
Most of what the average MA school teaches as weapons defense is dangerous and poorly understood. Most of this stems from a lack of understanding in the subject and very little pressure testing of their techniques. Some of it stems from far to little framiliarity with the weapons being defended against. I've known instructors who spent years showing people how to defend against rubber knives and fake guns but never cutting a single thing or firing a single bullet. Its swimming on dry land.
