Weird control groups.... The purest form of TKD guys do not work the upper body, it is generally more of a ballast for launching spectacular kicks. Also, TKD guys do, as said use speed and accuracy more than strength and mass. One group focuses on accuracy the other on strength. Obviously if we take the offshoots of TKD and kickboxing we get many variations... tkd guys who spar full contact (Moo Duk Kwan) kick boxers who practice with no contact, etc.

TKD is a great art to focus on the legs for a while , it will help any kickboxer and vice versa... anyone who learns tro mix it up and take a few to the chops will benefit greatly. But the attributes of each of these approaches seem to me to be complimentary to each other but hardly similar.
This thread never was a high quality conversation - My friend vern Gilbert on the William Acquier thread.

yep, proof of what bullshido has been preaching for years.

i shudder to think what my skills might be like if i had abandoned TKD in my teens and focused on grappling and taken up kick boxing as soon as it was available.

We also emphasized pulling back and not striking with full power, this led to a reliance on a lot of weak fast strikes.

My TKD background helped with basic coordination and footwork in MT but it also gave me some bad habits that are hard to break.

I think a TKD background can help in MT training but it would have been better to have spent that time training MT or some other kickboxing style.
My school is full contact. Even at the beginner level we don't really hold back in terms of the level of force and contact.

Though I may just be fortunate I trained at a school where we spar quite frequently.

It'd be outstanding if martial arts superstar Jason Brinn could pop in here and give us some insight as to why this study is false and aliveness isn't need the majority of the time when training.

Purest form of TKD? Both ITF and WTF would arguably lay claimto that title, but it does seem to me that you are talking about WTF here, no?
