Doesn't beating a big tire with a sledge hammer also work on a lot of core strength?

It does, yeah. That and obviously it works the hell out of your grip strength and forearms. And besides, it's fun as hell and an awesome departure from normal workouts. Seriously, you're being handed a sledgehammer and being told to go apeshit on something, and it's actually good for you. What's not to like?

I know it sounds silly, because im guessing the answer is simple, but i was just curious as to why you would do that to train particulars muscle in a functional exercise rather then something else you can do at the gym if you do not own one of those giant tires =p

any info would be greatly appreciated.
It's primarily used for upper body conditioning/endurance. It also develops explosive power in you back and core since you don't have to stop the swing just allow it to hit the tire. It's also a killer for your shoulders and forearms.

Yes, you utilize your primarily your obliques to generate power in your swing and the other muscles get a workout in stabilizing you while your swinging away.

That's the secret head movement application hidden in tire-hammer kata.
