    Moved to portland

Hi I just moved to college in portland, and am interested in martial arts, I have previous bjj experiance, but I'd be open to anything.

    Can someone recommend anyplace?
Yes I know about team quest, straight blast gym, and impact jj, and I can use google so please no google search recommendations.
Has anyone trained at these places firsthand.

I've trained at SBG for the last 3 years. I just got my blue belt from Matt Thornton a few months ago. It's a great gym. I don't say that because I train there, I train there because I can honestly say that. The coaches are all very technical & the vibe is extraordinarily healthy/friendly. It's certainly not the fanciest place in town, but I'd strongly recommend it.

I've also visited Impact a few times & know some people who train there. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about the place. I'd advise you to visit whichever is closer & take a trial class.

I'll also say that my primary coach, Eric Hemphill, is about to open a BJJ school in the goose hollow area. He should be opening his doors some time in the next few months.

SBG for sure, one of my coaches was with the founding guys there, great gym from everything I've heard.

Alive MMA is good as well. One of my training buddies runs the midnight class there. They have some good talent. http://www.www.alivemma.com (the portland one heh).

Impact JJ in Newburg. I've met with quite a few of their guys at the fights, good guys. I've talked with the owner a few times and he's a good coach. Ricky Story is from there (fought in UFC 99 in Germany). He and myself and Gerald Strebent were looking at guard passes after a show in Vancouver. Very down to earth and good guy. http://www.bjjnewberg.com/

Quest of course. Fabiano Scherner is their BJJ coach now (gi at least), he recently got his 2nd degree. I've done probably 15 hours of work with him in Gi, very good guy. http://www.tqfc.com

Hope it helps. I hear Nate Quarry also has a place up there, but I haven't seen it.

Ok I've called both sbg and team quest several times and apparently they don't answer their phones...
Not only that but sbg doesn't appear to have a class schedule on their website so idk when to show up or how trial classes work.
SBG-ape, can you fill me in? when can I show up? later classes are probably preferable

I've highlighted the evening classes that are open to everyone & would serve as a good introduction to the gym.

The Monday/Tuesday coach is a brown belt named Cane. He's a very mellow guy who's great at breaking material down in a way that is logical, accessible to beginners & still useful to more experienced players.

The Wednesday/Friday coach has been training for less time then I have, but just got a very well deserved purple belt.

    Matt, is Matt Thornton.

I've never taken Josh's boxing classes but I hear good things from those who have.

Basically, any night of the week would work. I'd suggest coming in a little early & checking out both the gym's website & it's facebook page before hand.

Gerald is in Eugene now, he runs Northwest Training Center (also Eugene 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu) and is a black belt under Eddie Bravo. He's regularly on the Oregon MMA circuit as a corner/coach, and fights pro when he can get opponents.

    His gym?

PM me for his cell if you want. (I can forward your name to him etc).

Hey DSL, my previous bjj experience was actually with eddie bravo here in los angeles (I'm back home from college for summer). Unfortunately while back on spring break while rolling I tore my meniscus, and required surgery. I'm mostly recovered already, though out of shape.

I'll probably train at alive mma when I get back, because its down the block from me, and I'm friends with a few of the students and an instructor.

Thanks though guys for the advice.

Consider the Obukan. Many advanced students, solid instruction, excellent attitudes, very affordable and it's incredibly conveniently located on a bus route or ten minutes from MAX.

    Google for directions.
