Correction: Performing a kick that requires several rotations in the air before you land it is impractical. Taekwondo, in and of itself, is much more practical than that particular kick.

Let's not make any sweeping generalizations.

Maybe when you're at a more advanced level. I recall attempting one at my first sparring match at a tournament, as a yellow belt... I might as well have painted a bulls-eye on my crotch.

Very true. I just feel a tornado kick of any ilk is too flashy for most uses, save TKD sparring/fighting and movies.

I like the turn around side kick as part of a combo, followed by a front leg hook or a back leg round kick.

Tornado-anything-kick is way too flashy and impractical for anything...except movies Even in sparring, anything that requires rotating more than maybe once is stupid, and impractical...And is going to cost you a lot of points. I used to try flashy bullshit like this, when I was a yellow/white belt and weighed about 20 pounds lighter. The only thing I've accomplished in a legitimate sparring match attempting any kick with the prefix "tornado" in front of it was flying in the other direction...The same direction of the trajectory of the much stronger, much better coordinated kick aimed at me from my opponent.

People love to crack TKD up to be some kind of useless vestigial theatrical martial art that only looks good. Taekwondo is great kicking-training. Not so much punching/upper body conditioning. (This is in general terms.)

Taekwondo sparring is not just some kind of fancy agility/speed/impractical exhibition like say, Capoeira. Lots of people like to make it out to be some kind of agility-tricking-bullshit. It isn't. I've had and seen a good number of sparring bouts. And you learn pretty quickly that if you want to get the most out of Taekwondo, you need to stay on your damn feet, and stay out of the air.

Tornado-spinning-XMA-5200-degree-axe crescent death-kick's are not real taekwonodo. It's an embellishment of a much simpler, much more effective technique.

Kicks where you are in the air should be used sparingly unless you know how to do them...and rotations in said kicks should be kept to one.

It irks me when people start talking about how they need to up their sparring game by making it more "Flashy", and adding more rotations to a kick. Sure, Science says that the more you rotate in the air, the more energy you generate with the kick...But that takes more energy on the ground to get the kick started to begin with...More energy that could be used on much more productive moves than the "tornado-kick".

The tornado kick is a bit flashy, but can be a solid kick if done properly. I have seen many cases where the tornado kick has been used successfully in sparring. The problem is when people can't seperate the "demo kick" from the "sparring kick". Just as you don't do a 180 degree vertical split in the air everytime you throw an axe kick you don't need to make a tornado kick that fancy. It's just one rotation and a rear-leg round kick.

spinning back, round house, and the tornado

i've never used the tornado in any hard sparring, but it's just so much fun to do.
