Two Pat Johnson the trainer on karate kid trained both Machio and the cobra kai guys during a summer break. He reckoned that Johnny was better than or equal to several other champions he had trained. (Perhaps this one was hyperbole for the film)
Did you actually see what Daniel-san was doing for those few months, because I thought Mr.Miyagi was the "traditional" Instructor

Before the counter-argument assault begins, understannd that I concede that there is no replacement for contact sparring, and that if someone expects to be able to use a technique in a fight, they, quite frankly, need to use it in a fight, at least a simulated one. Still, though, many parents do not understand this concept, and a 14 year old convincing his mother to let him into a no-contact school, as opposed to a sparring one, may be easier. The child can get a decent training base, and find a sparring school later, when they can choose for themselves. Also, some people simply do not have the confidence to begin with sparring, and attending a no-contact schol for a time could be good for them. The point stands that there is no substitute for training against a resistant opponent, and Karate Kids "you painted a fence, now go kick some ass... peacefully" approach to things is still ridiculous". But all no-contact schools are not evil.
The problem with finding a sparring school later is that they'd have to wait until they are eighteen. They are already in a perfectly good school that they wanted to join, and they've already put in so much work in the school that it would seem to their mothers that it'd be a waste to switch schools.

    I don't!

But both movies at this stage show pretty dated training techniques/methodologies, obviously to some extend 'glammed up' for dramatic purposes, no?

Will no one point out that it was made obvious through the narrative that the Cobra Kai kids could have basically at any point they wanted totally incapacitate Daniel when that one of them was told to, but said he didn't want to be disqualified? The other kids were doing kip ups and ****, it clear as day that if they deviated from the rules even slightly they'd rape him.

The lesson was just on the perseverance and self confidence thing. Miyagi thought he wouldn't have a chance in the tournament, he just imagined if he showed up and got beat up the other kids would be friendlier towards him.

The crane kick was dumb but nothing matched the magic hand rub technique or Miyagi taking out several fit youngsters much bigger and faster than himself. Take out those points of wizardry and even the crane kick and chop sticks have their place.
