Just found this video on YouTube. It's a clip featuring a kid in a karate tournament using obviously Judo throws to dish out some serious point-spam.



You never know, the kid might become a future Lyoto Machida! ;)

I doubt that is the case with most karate schools. we were allowed sweeps but if we threw anyone I would think big **** may have ensued.

still.. this goes to show that judo rules

I've never seen anything like that in my karate tournaments. Heck, half of them were done on basketball courts with no padding. Still, just goes to show you that judo will always have a place in MMA.

You are absolutely 100% allowed to do hip and leg throws in AAU and JKA karate tournaments. Shoulder throws and sacrifice throws, conversely, are explicitly banned.
Unfortunately, a lot of karate instructors and schools don't realize that.
Throws are, in my opinion, a highly underused scoring tool in karate; since so few karateka practice them, it's easy for competitors like the one in the video above to manhandle opponent's with ease.

yep i totally agree.
I once went to a kenpo/karate tournament and one of the kids got tossed with a hip trow and I guess I was sitting behind that kids parents and they were like "you see that this isn't mma, that's all show, this a real art, I bet if they really went at it in the parking lot "timmy" would just kick him in the head and end the fight":BangHead:

That was taught at my old place. I originally started in a Taekwondo academy that didn't do anything like that, and I actually left after getting my BB as a kid because I didn't like the forms and point sparring.

However I went to Shitoryu dojo at a time that did. The instructor had a diverse background, and also offered kickboxing and shoot wrestling classes once, but as far as Karate, we were able to do all of that. The instructor, Jeff Bedard, has had 12 national, and 4 world championships, as well as being a former executive director for USA National Shito-Kai, being the American rep for WSKF, I think he took advantage of having that knowledge.
