High Kick Girl

The Good

Awesome action flick. A very real gritty feel to the fights, not so much because they are realistic, but because they are really whaling on each other! They make that quite clear in the myriad slow-mo shots they use. The fights, therefor, look really vicous. I am not kidding.

The girl is cute and allegedly is some kind of youth karate champ. The Sensei character is also played by a real karate "master" (JKA 6th dan) and there are cameos by other real MAists including MMA fighter Hisae Watanabe (who looks smoking hot, btw). So that gives the movie some authenticity that's quite cool.

The Bad

There are some plot holes which I won't detail here for the sake of spoilers. The bad guys are a super cheesy group of comic book villain rejects called the destroyers. The girl isn't featured nearly enough in the final half of the film. And they waaaayyy over use the slow motion in several of the fight scenes and in the movie over all.

The Ugly

The message of the movie (and it has a clear and purposeful message) is complete bullshido. Allow me to summarize. "Kata is the best way to learn karate" and "karate is not about fighting." Hard to stomach, even with the rest of the film's awesomeness.

In conclusion

Despite the bs message about karate and learning to fight, this movie is simply too awesome to be ignored. You must see it.

PS. I searched in both the internal search engine and the google and saw nothing on this. So I don't want to see any douchebag comments about "search function, noob!"

Yes. That's probably why only her, her master and the badguys can fight at all. The girl mows through karate black belts like grass and the bad guys beat the **** out of all the black belts at her school. That leads to one of the best lines in the film though.

After dojo storming the girls school, one of the bad guys, a girl, says to the assistant master in a super "kawai" voice, "So, you're the assistant master? You were surprisingly weak!" lol

I just watched this a coulpe days ago... and I would have to say that's a pretty spot on review.

Worth watching, but the use of slow motion gets annoying.

This is so last year!

The slo mo replay of the scene you just watched did get over done.

Still Rena is cute and yes she is a karate champ.

Tatsuya Naka who played Matsumura, her sensei, was also Taikan in Kuro Obi. Which had a similar message of "Karate is not for fighting"

I saw this a couple of weeks ago, and I was sufficiently entertained.

My favorite part in the movie was definitely the beginning when one of the thugs being chased by a destroyer hides behind a random girl and uses her as a shield. I LOL'd so hard when the destroyer smashed through both of them with a high kick.

The story was weak and the slow mo got pretty annoying sometimes, but the choreography was quite good. I recall that in the final fight scene the slow mo made some "pulled shots" blaringly apparent, when I wouldn't have noticed otherwise.

Also, the girl was cute.
