I freely admit that Freakanomics is, IIRC, where I heard about the study.

Also, I'm going to take PsychoDad's advice he sent me via feedback: I'm not going to call the gym and tell them when I'm coming to train. If they want to play by the rules of the streets, I'll just show up to each location on separate days. They'll figure it out when I initiate my LEG KICK TO NECKBREAK COMBO!!!!!!!!!!!
Or what about how the US military is now teaching it's soldiers Pancrase style MMA? I honestly don't buy the whole story about all the Asian martial arts being developed for war. It's all too far back in the past and unsupported by history.

I have heard every krav maga person talk about how it's used in militaries though. That seems to be the main selling point.

Which of course explains why lots of TMA instructers claim there art is "1000s of years old" yet include gun disarms in their curriculum. Because ninjas shooting RPGs was just part of growing up in Feudal Japan.

OMG SERIOUSLY!! And don't forget how rules like no biting or eye gouging limits 99% of most TMA style's moves (which they never use in sparring themselves and therefore can't use anyways).

we used biting and eye gouging continuously at my ninjer dojo. It's really hard to keep the class sizes up, though. And nobody wants to insure us either. I don't get it.

So did you mean compliant drills or competition? I think it is generally true of all three.

I was thinking that rules like "pretend this hurts when I pretend to do it" and "don't actually hit people" are pretty restrictive too.
