Xingyiquan/Shorin-ryu Karate Historical Connection?

Okay guys,
My Chinese language instructor sent me a response to my question via an email which says:

I searched some information about Wong Chung Yoh from the internet.
Wong Chung Yoh (公相君gōngxiàngjūn) was a military officer lived in Qing dynasty (17th century), he was good at a style of Chinese martial arts known as xingyiquan(形意拳xíngyìquán). He arrived in Japan to teach Chinese kongfu in 1766. The best student of Wong Chung Yoh is Chatan Yara( 北谷屋良), who was the teacher of Sakugawa Kanga(佐久川宽贺）. Sakugawa Kanga was known as the father of karate (空手道 kōngshǒudào). So, some people believe Wong Chung Yoh is the founder of karate.

Don't know if it will help but I have sent a message to Patrick McCarthy for his thoughts on this. Will post the reply if anything comes of it.
Would it be worth looking at the forms or kata to see if any of the methods seem similar in a non superficial way?
