Thank you KK. Do you know anything about the era and circumstances of the "no judo or wrestling throws" rule being added? I am assuming that is in response to farang using those techniques, but am wondering which fights might have seen these techniques when they were still legal.

The vid I posted earlier with Urquidez vs a Japanese kickboxer has a huuge O Goshi at the end, although that fight was under the Japanese rules. Does anybody know what the formal rules differences were between Muaythai and the Japanese copy?

The Benny fight was even later than the vids you found (thanks BTW!)

I'm thinking of trying to get an interview with Donnie Carolei to get the referee's eye perspective on MT throwing, after all the rule really is WTRA (whatever the ref allows).

Unfortunately, I have limited knowledge regarding when rules were changed. The major rule changes I know of began in the 80's with Dieselnoi. After his era of dominance, knee strikes to the groin were banned (they were legal during Dieselnoi's reign, and that was his specialty).

Then in the 90's, the rule change was that the clinch "backbreaker" move was banned. In other words, fighters clinching the body had to keep their arms up around the rib-cage, and not around the lower back.

Another rule change in the 90's was in regards to the "plow" move, where you would run someone across the ring and into the ropes, then perform a technique such as a jump kick or jump knee. A major reason for this was the fight between Rainbow Pratalay vs. Den Muangsurin. Rainbow trapped Den's Push Kick and ran him across the ring, but when he attempted to deliver a jump kick, Den slipped it and Rainbow flew over the top ropes and smashed face first into the concrete floor.

The latest change occurred about a year or two ago in regards to the clinch. Its a very subtle rule change where the referees break the clinch a lot faster than they used to, especially if the body clinch is employed. A clinch must remain active with EFFECTIVE knees being used, or the referee will separate the fighters. The fights were beginning to become boring clinchfests, and the sport of Muay Thai lost a lot of its casual fans. Now, unfortunately, most people who attend the fights are just the gamblers.

In regards to the videos of Kyokushin vs. Muay Thai, we don't know if those were genuine Muay Thai rules or modified rules. They *may* have allowed the Japanese fighters some allowances.....
