What tv show was this shot for? It was done presumably in the 80s but for who? The whole they wanted to believe so they felt it seems iffy if in fact the scientists presented were really scientists and really skeptics. Usually thats the point where these things fall apart. Slight of hand is a definit possibility but some back ground on where this film came from would be helpful in establishing the legitimacy of the documentary itself. The bit with the LED was interesting.

Honestly, these tricks are just confidence tricks.

My reference: I used to read tarot cards for money. I never read a manual or anything. Just used cold reading and visual cues.

Ditto. Gullible party girls love hearing generalizations applied to them.

Everything looks like electricity. Can be generated by the nervous system, but at that quantities? Would be cool...

So far, the only quantified ability displayed by anyone, was the raising of body temperature by Gtum-mo practitioners. The best they ever managed, I believe, was 8-15 degree (C) increase.

8-15 C ? How did they survive that?

The newspaper started burning from the ground. Is this usual for flashpaper or fires ignited by electricity?
I read about a "healer" hiding a battery in the sole of his shoe in an esoteric magazine. He justified that as a treatment for his own veines in front of a court. MAybe John Chang is hiding an electric device somewhere.

Edit: The effect on his patients IS electricity. It looks exactly like it. We've played around with all different kinds of electric currents at my physiotherapy school. Interestingly it wouldn't cause any reactions in the muscles if it was linear direct current. He uses alternating current or direct current that goes on and off at at least 50Hz without changing polarity.

Sorry for referencing Wiki, just didn't feel like doing an extensive search.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tummo

It seems that the actual temp. change was 8.3 degrees.

Does seem like quite a feat to withstand.

The average body temp. in celcius is around 36.
    37 C is a very light fever.
38 C is a moderate fever, with quite a bit of discomfort.
39 is where you start getting close to delerious, and extremely uncomfortable.
At 40, you're usually being rushed to the ER.
By the time you reach 41 and you're not in a hospital, you're fucked.

So if the average person is say, 36 at the start, then adds 8 degrees, then he is well at 44 during Gtum-mo meditation. This would definitely explain their resistance to extreme colds, but does raise the question whether or not the (specifically heat-raising) practice is healthy for the body long term.

No comment on the newspaper, since I have no idea what the trick is. MTripp might offer a suggestion, since he is a stage magician.

"Monks in Tibet-that mountainous country so blessed with oddities-can consciously raise the temperature in their hands and feet 6-7 C (10-12 F), in laboratory conditions (Benson, et al., 1982)."

Raised to what? You can have a low enough temperature in your hands and feet to not have to raise to damaging temperatures while raising it by 8C there.

Maybe John Chang somehow does the same as an electric eel. Would be cool for any giless grappling. He has some students in Australia, but what the heck they are doing
has nothing to do with electricity:
