Its a sport, but its still a fight. Fighting is about dominating your opponent, "imposing your will", as Randy would say. Laying on the ground, pretending to be hurt doesn't look dominating.

Faking is the exact opposite of the qualities most fans expect from fighters. It looks totally out of character for guys who hit each other in the head their entire lives to try to win this way.

Umm... if you go flying and you get a free throw, and you win by one point...

By faking to get the ref to interfere, you're really only denying yourself the reality of your own martial arts. Koscheck now required a referee for his technique to be successful in defeating Daley.

Don't the rules allow penalties for unsportsmanlike conduct?

    Doesn't happen in football, no.

It does in soccer (diving) and basketball (flopping), and it can be penalized with fines and suspensions in both cases.

1 He ATTEMPTED to knee Kos in the head. Weather he did or not, IDK, wasn't a good enough shot.

2 So the nicest guy in MMA - GSP is going to fight the biggest D-bag in MMA - Kos!

3 Dan Mirgliotta(or something) fucking man handled Paul so hard. lol

I was a little shocked. Sure, he changed sides quickly, but I guess even a dog can realize it has more in common with the wolf than with the shephard.

I give him the names of some BJJ schools in the area, and we go our separate ways.

I don't think it is different at all. It's one of the several reasons I can barely stand to watch modern football so I'd rather it didn't infiltrate a sport I currently enjoy.

OK, taking the black hat off.

Of course it was a ***** move; but it was an opening to exploit. Would I coach a player to do it, no. Would I be pissed if they did it, yes.

However, I would also be pissed if my player threw the knee, because THAT is what created the opening to be exploited.

    From UFC.com

    Fouls

    25. Attacking an opponent on or during the break.

    26. Attacking an opponent who is under the care of the referee.
    27. Attacking an opponent after the bell has sounded the end of the period of unarmed combat.
    28. Flagrantly disregarding the instructions of the referee.
    29. Timidity, including, without limitation, avoiding contact with an opponent, intentionally or consistently dropping the mouthpiece or faking an injury.
    30. Interference by the corner.
    31. Throwing in the towel during competition.

The fact of the matter is that as a referee you only have a second to make a decision on if the guy is faking or really hurt. Given a slow mo reply it is obvious that the knee missed. But from a different angle you would think it hit especially with Kos hamming it up. (Think of a movie fight scene.)

Dan should have caught the smack talking and warned Kos if that was the case. Then deducted a point if it continued. If the crowd was loud and he was away from the fighters it would be tough to hear them so it is understandable.

    Daley punching him is inexcusable.

Fact of the matter is that some refs let some things slide which they shouldn't. The sport is reaching a level now where professionalism and sportsmanship is a must for it to stay at the top of American sports culture. Unfortunately now that there is decent money to be made the martial artist will be placed on the back burner and the athlete will be brought to the forefront. Coaches and trainers will allow this to happen because their guy is making them money.

Unlike Japan which will take action at the club level. Aoki was removed from his position as a coach at his club in a public manner. This showed that his trainers cared about the image of the sport more than the individuals accomplishments.
Judo is only gentle for the guy on top.
