I meant more 'rag' status but point taken.
Apparently William Fairbairn also founded his own martial art which he called 'Defendu'. I don't think that it quite caught on, but it seems that most of his training was indeed in Judo and that's probably what he taught the recruits during the war (he later published a book on combative called Get Tough which showed a 'Japanese Strangle' aka hadaka jime as a sentry removal technique). As for Edward did you mean Eric? Eric Anthony Sykes worked closely with Fairbain and it seems that they designed a combat knife (Fairbairn-Sykes Fighting Knife) for use during CQC type situations. This would be William Ewart Fairbairn and Edward Anthony Sykes. As Fairbairn's Dan rankings from the Kodokan are signed by Jigoro Kano himself, this qualifies as martial arts related.Last edited by nightowl; 5/09/2010 10:06am at .

Short version. Defendu was developed for policing situations. it dealt with multiple restraints and locks in addition to strking and throwing, use of clubs, etc. When Fairbairn (and Sykes. You are correct on the name. Thanks for catching my error) taught the military(in Britain, Canada and America) they removed most of the restraining techniques from Defendu. After the war, when Fairbairn was teaching the police in locations such as Cyprus, it was based off of Get Tough!.
Fairbairn's original training was in jiu jitsu(no one is completely sure of the style. Most common debates are between Tenshin ryu and Shinno Shindo ryu). He also studied Chinese boxing. -
