    When I was younger I did TKD and use to condition my hands on a makiwara board. I would so rounds and rounds on the heavy bag without gloves and had some serious callouses on my hands.

    I then learned of a medical condition called arthritis. Seems to be that if you continue to abuse your body later in life you will regret it.

    Since I started really training fighters I have seen hand injuries at just about every fight and during training. There is no way to completely protect the hand but an effort needs to be made if you are going to train regularly.

    I know I know "my sensei/sifu" can has or does this and he is 120 years old and can punch through 2" of steel. There will always be people who can do extraordinary things but make sure you understand the actual limits of the human body.

    TMA deal with making the one single effective strike while fighters train to deliver a multitude of strikes due to the fact they are fighting an equally trained opponent. So instead of being an idiot about the training methodology of others take notes and figure out what you are trying to achieve with your training.
    Judo is only gentle for the guy on top.

    I was always under the impression that if you want to protect your hands/wrists then some serious grip training is in order. Not sure if this is accurate (I haven't seen any studies on it and it would probably be hard to do so), but my guess would be that the moving of weights would not only increase the strength of the forearm but also the tendons/bone of the hand as they become accustomed to more weight. Still this could be rubbish.

    My thought would be that if your training for a bare knuckle kind of contest hitting a well padded heavy bag for a little while just to see what its like might be beneficial, but doing rounds and rounds on it seems stupid.

    Then what about Makiwara conditioning?

    They say stuff about developing callouses and making the bones denser or something.

    Is this true?

    IIRC the consensus on that type of hand conditioning is that you can gain strength/toughness in the short term but that you're likely setting yourself up for weakness and disability in the long term.

    No. you can hit people but dont be a tard and punch their forehead.

    the amount of street fights involving punching says breaking your hand isnt a 100% occurence

    I learned the hard way about punching without gloves. Busted my middle knuckles on my left hand once doing bag work. Hurt like a bitch and it didn't help I continued on with the class rather then treat it right away.....
