The hood mentality is crippling disease, that attacks your nervous system. It makes you nervous of the system. Gangsters and hood rats are especially susceptible to this growth stunting mentality. The hood is where I'm from, but it's not what I am. The hood is where I'm from, but it's not what I am. --Keith David--Ice Cube

That gives some credibility to FMA practitioners using the titles, yes. But most martial artist "masters" who do use them do not draw their lineage to FMA, but to japanese or chinese arts. Where the titles in question are NOT used. I would call into question any karate teacher claiming the title Sifu, or wushu masters going by Sensei. And I would call into question any non FMA teacher calling themselves DR. or Professor.

So sorry - but these "Honorific Professor Titles" are quite common in some American Ke?po circles - and have been around for years, one such example:
1st Degree Black - Junior Instructor
2nd Degree Black - Associate Instructor
3rd Degree Black - Senior Instructor
4th Degree Black - Head Instructor
5th Degree Black - Associate Professor
6th Degree Black - Professor
7th Degree Black - Senior Professor
8th Degree Black - Associate Master
9th Degree Black - Master of the Arts
10th Degree Black - Senior Master of the Arts
Not saying I agree with the concept, but it is out there. -

Okay in the FMA world there was one Professor and that was Remy Amador Presas the founder of Modern Arnis. It should be noted that Modern Arnis was incorporated into the school system and he helped to spread it through the Philippines in this manner. So academically speaking in a way he was a Professor as his curriculum in Modern Arnis was adopted across most of the nation. Most other FMA practitioners who use this title do not have that kind of credibility and yes that title is abused.

"Professor" has a long history of association with combat sports and exercise. In the 19th century it was common for senior teachers of boxing, gymnastics etc. to be referred to as professors, without any academic connection; it just meant that they were recognized as experts in their fields.
Oddly enough, senior "Punch and Judy" puppeteers are still (traditionally) referred to as "Professor".Check out the Bullshido.net Western Martial Arts Forum for all things Western, martial and arty.
