I've got a friend that is a Professor of Karate, awarded by the martial arts society he is a part of. He is a Hachidan with over 25 years experience in the art so it doesn't seem inappropriate to me.
He doesn't go around asking to be referred to as "Professor S...", it's just a title used in formal ceremony type things such as promotions, etc. -

I love the McDojo trend to call themselves "Dr." or "professor". They get it from Judo where Jigoro Kano was titled Dr. and Professor. The thing is that HIS title originated in his academic career with Doctorates in literature and philosophy, NOT from his martial art career. But the McDojo people think it was a doctor title in Martial art and parrots it.

Honorary Ph.Ds don't make you a doctor, its nothing but a sign of recognition. They're given out to presidents and rappers alike but it doesn't mean you've earned that title out of hard work. Michael J. Fox apparently has a honorary doctorate but he's not a damn doctor and nor will he ever be called one.
