Plus, how exactly are you supposed to effectively apply a "defense" without knowing the "attack"?
Didn't I see another thread here recently started by someone who thought (using the word in its loosest sense) he would save training time by only learning "defensive" grappling and concentrating on his striking? Where does this idea that attack and defense are discrete skills that can be learned separately come from anyway? -

Actually if you watch that Judo self-defense tape I recommend so highly, you will see how important a double leg is for dealing with rear assaults.
Moreover, and this is what is so often missed, the bad guy wants us to stick around, not run away. The way they do that is by holding and hitting. So no matter how you describe it, you are going to be "grappling."
