Please correct me if I'm wrong as I'm a whitebelt, but doesn't knowing how to hold a top position (ie. mount, side control, kesa gatame etc) + submitting someone = grappling?

Sigh... I can't believe I read that thing

    This.

Plus, how exactly are you supposed to effectively apply a "defense" without knowing the "attack"?

Didn't I see another thread here recently started by someone who thought (using the word in its loosest sense) he would save training time by only learning "defensive" grappling and concentrating on his striking? Where does this idea that attack and defense are discrete skills that can be learned separately come from anyway?

Actually if you watch that Judo self-defense tape I recommend so highly, you will see how important a double leg is for dealing with rear assaults.

Moreover, and this is what is so often missed, the bad guy wants us to stick around, not run away. The way they do that is by holding and hitting. So no matter how you describe it, you are going to be "grappling." The offense/defense thing is a distinction without a difference.
"Out of every hundred men, ten shouldn't even be there, eighty are just targets, nine are the real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle. Ah, but the one, one is a warrior, and he will bring the others back." -- Hericletus, circa 500 BC

Have you considered just asking politely? I'm sure most training partners, opponents, thugs would happily let you take a dominant position if asked...so long as you don't use "offensive" grappling that is.

    This.

Also, I think sweeps are offensive grappling, not defensive grappling (escape).

Could be. Hard to keep track and, honestly, I have no motivation to do so.

I don't really think my grappling is that offensive. I might tell people to go **** themselves once in a while when they're winning, but generally I think I'm quite polite.

Dude rubbing your dick on someone while in backmount screaming "squeal piggy" at the top of your lungs is definitely offensive. (I should be studying...)
