    Hell yeah! Hell no!

There's nothing new under the Sun

Reading one of the old Judo books on judoinfo.com, I recently burst out laughing. The book was Modern Judo vol. 2 by Charles Yerkow, 3d Ed. (c) 1947. Available here: http://judoinfo.com/new/alphabetical...364-judo-books

The book itself is quite interesting -- Judo stick fighting!

I've attached a couple of pages. There really is nothing new under the Sun.

[By "kidney-scissor jump" he means what we'd call "jump guard". Daki-age ftw.]

In point of fact, cane fighting was a big part of Judo in the old days.

A yawara stick was called a "Judo stick" for many years because of how many schools taught it in their training.

The more these old text's come to light, the more interesting it will get....
"Out of every hundred men, ten shouldn't even be there, eighty are just targets, nine are the real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle. Ah, but the one, one is a warrior, and he will bring the others back." -- Hericletus, circa 500 BC

While most techniques and training methods have been done before, I feel that statements like "there's nothing new under the sun" can be counterproductive to having your art evolve.

If nothing else thanks for posting that link. I am always on the lookout for places where I can download old martial arts manuals.

You gotta be careful. Old people don't use canes just for walking anymore.

Downloaded this. The argument begun on the second page you posted seems familiar somehow...Thread title correct.

Edit: Nice (and by nice I mean annoying) to see that Judoinfo gets the same shitty "no touch KO" ads as here.

Naturally, there's refinement and new looks at old moves in any art. It's one of the nice parts about competition-driven evolution. There rarely are any new moves, just tweaks and refinements. But some of this is rules-driven. For example, jumping closed guard is a viable competition strategy in BJJ because the rules effectively encourage it by barring slamming -- and techniques evolve around that ruleset.
