    The Naked Warrior

I was thinking of getting this book, but I want to know if anyone has read it or has any experiance with the author's training methods. This is a book on bodyweight exercises.

The author is Pavel Tatsouline who is at the site dragondoor.com. I"m asking because the site with it's product reviews seems a little gimicky, but I've heard good things about Pavel at the same time.

    Any feedback will be appreciated.

Therefore by proxy I worship Pavel, and therefore you should too.

In this forum there are many threads about his books.

Normally, I'd say I was grappling, but I was taking down and mounting people, and JFS has kindly informed us that takedowns and being mounted are neither grappling nor anti grappling, so I'm not sure what the **** I was doing. Maybe schroedinger's sparring, where it's neither grappling nor anti-grappling until somoene observes it and collapses the waveform, and then I RNC a cat to death.----fatherdog

Pavel is the man. I haven't read this particular book, but if Pavel knows as much about bodyweight exercises as he does about everything else he's written, you should be set. Get the "Relax Into Stretch" book as well, it should make an excellent companion to this one.

Oh, and read the reviews at Amazon as well.

Better advice I have not seen.

Only if while I perform, you promise to use really big words I don't really understand, but can agree with in order to appear smarter than I am.

    Akurra -
I've actually done a thread on this book here at Bullshido.

    Here it is:

Should tell you what you need to know. Enjoy.

Thanks for that. While we are on the topic, do you recommend bodyweight exercises above weight training for martial artists? What type of training do you think is best?

Thats kind of hard to give a simple answer to.
    My personal opinions:

I think bodyweight exercises have the best direction application to martial arts and are WAY under utilized by most people.

You can build strength, flexibility, balance, cardio and muscular endurance in the same workout using bodyweight exercises. You can train your body at angles which would be unsafe to do while working with weights.

I count chinups/pullups and dips as bodyweight exercises, which I don't think anybody denies are two of the best exercises you can do.

Weight training can be good. However there is no point doing it if it leaves you sore and tired, continually negatively affecting your MA training (if improving in MA is your primary goal).

If you want to put on size, weighted work is the best way to go.

If you want to build max/limit strength (ie the ability to push/pull the maximum amount of weight possible for an extremely short period), then weight training is great. You just have to be aware that this may not transfer well at times to your ability in martial arts.

If you have enough time in the day to eat right, sleep right, train with weights, train with bodyweight, train cardio, and train MA, then go for it.

If like most people, you have to work, have a partner (maybe have kids), then you've got to try and get the most bang for you buck.

If I had enough time I'd do everything.
I don't so I do primarily bodyweight exercises.
I also deadlift, 4-5 times a week for low reps to ensure I'm not stuffed, and use a kettlebell for explosive lifts.

    ...door opened

If you're concious about what you're doing and are critical about it I'm of the opinion that weight training is far superior to bodyweight excercises.
