I actually got a black eye in a TKD class when I was 17 because some big fucker (6'5 and high 200s) planted a right cross directly into my face. I was scheduled to get my driver's lisence the next day, so I have the black eye in my photo.

My mom freaked out, and went off about "lack of control". I told her "What am I doing in martial arts if I'm not here to learn how to fight?" She apparently thought I could become some unstoppable killing machine by punching air and kata.

Mom's just get too maternal.

Story doesn't really relate, I just like my driver's lisence photo.

Haha. First time I got hurt I was a blue belt and got caught with a turning kick right on my left cheek. Swelled up pretty bad. Came home that night and my mom sees it.

"What happened?"

"Sparring injury. Kicked in my face."

"...Oh ok then." And she went about her business. Never fussed once about it.

Man, no lie. Nevermind I was a 15 year old blackbelt at 155lbs, and nevermind now that at 210 and a more avid boxer and wrestler, she still says she feels safe around me "because I'm a black belt".

When I had my first amatuer MMA fight, she said I should have the advantage because I have a black belt and the other guy doesn't, haha.
