    Hell yeah! Hell no!

Origin of Karo's No Gi Judo

I'm creating this thread for retnuheht/T HUNTER to tell the story of how it was developed, and for folks to ask questions about it.

    It's a fascinating story.

Also the story about where Emin Botztepe's "grappling" came from ;)

Edit: I thought he would post here immediately, but I guess he's got something to do first.

Update: T HUNTER is having technical difficulties and can't get on the site. I'm getting the story from him by phone, and will post it (pobably in at least 2 parts) for him.

    Sorry for the delay.

    Part I

I figured I would ask Arce for some background before getting to the Hayastan stuff, and I ended up with like 6 pages of notes. I'm writing up the first few pages in this post. The rest will follow prolly tomorrow.

Mod powers that be, if this background material doesn't belong here feel free to situate it wherever it should live. I am sure a technical discussion of No Gi Judo will be he end result of all this. I didn't intend to get so much background, but now that I have it I figure I should post it in the same thread. I hope that's OK. Understanding T HUNTER's background is important to the No Gi story.

Everything after this line I am posting in the first person (Arce's voice) because that's the way I recorded it. Any errors on my part, I'm sure Steve will be able to correct when he is able to log on.
    ***********************************************

I started training martial arts in 1974 at the age of 4, at Chuck Norris' TSD Karate where I studied TKD, TSD and Judo (Yudo) under Norris and Pat Johnson. I trained there until 1984 when Norris left the Dojang to start his UFAS system. At that time I had 1st Dan rank in all three styles. Although Norris signed off on my Shodan, Johnson indicated to me several times that he was unsure as to whether or not Chuck actually passed his Judo BB test in Korea.

At this time I was 14, and my mother moved me to Yong Kil Kin's Dojang for my HS years.I trained there until 1987 ans was awarded 2nd dan in TKD and Judo there. I also began working out with several Iranian wrestlers from a nearby school (my HS did not offer wrestling). My friends Amir and Mohammed would eventually introduce me to Reza Nasri, Matt Ghaffari and Emin Boztepe. And the three of us would train at Gracie Torrance and BHJJ together in the future.

After high school I enlisted in the Marine Corps and completed AIT for MOS 5811 (Military Police) and 5816 (Special Reaction Team (3RT) Member) before being stationed in Okinawa.

While in Okinawa I competed in Judo and NCAA rules wrestling, and was all forces champion at 84kg in both sports for Okinawa and mainland Japan.

After 6 months in Okinawa I was permanently stationed in Quantico, VA, where I met and trained under my coach world champion wrestler and SAMBO player Greg Gibson...

The first time Emin came to Hyastan...he was trepid (A Turk in an Armenian Gym)...he got paired with Manvel...who took him down...and mounted him for the entire Monday night Open Mat Adult...this was 03-04 hours...and then finished him with Juji...when we called time (Gene and Gokor would wrap it up...as it was their Gym)...so little Manny just schooled the ANTI-GRAPPLING GRAND MASTER...Emin has always been polite to me...and never done a wrong to me...so I am NOT trying to hurt him...I just want you ALL to know...HOW things ACTUALLY went down...from then on...Emin would always come on Monday and pay his full fee for the Hyastan Open Mat...what we (Big Karo, Big Harout, little Karo, Me, etc.,) did to him...is what Manvel did to him that very first time...although he did get better...he still did NOT have it...he used what he learned from us...to sucker attack William Chung at one of his seminars...notice how he used NO Wing Tsun...to beat Wing Chun...hahaha...

he simply used sasae to yoko to atemi...in english...he used a lower leg/ankle/foot sweep throw...with a lot of youth, muscle, and power...to side mount...and then he just strikes with GNP...he did NOT learn that from Wing Chun...he learned it from Judo and Wrestling...ahhh...oh well...C'est la vie...

Many things we do naturally become difficult only when we try to make them intellectual subjects. It is possible to know so much about a subject that you become totally ignorant.

Greg Gibson and Craig Pittman defeated Mark Kerr, Randy Couture, and Mark Coleman, more times than I can remember...they owned them in Greco and Free...
