scorpion crunch... thoughts?
So I'm a blue belt training at Revolution team.
Got paired up with this other blue belt who is much smaller than I am, which is rare. (I weigh 160 with Gi on)
So ended up in his guard, I notice he tries to break my posture. I see that he reaches his hands behind my back, I assume he's trying to feed my Gi or something. I noticed his neck is exposed (since his arms are around me) and I go for ezekiel from inside his guard.
Before I can sink in the sub, a sudden, sharp pain as if someone kicked me in the kidneys and I tap right away.
And there ya go, it was a scorpion crunch. I didn't know what the move was, but it hurt like a mofo...
I talked to the guy afterwards, apparently he used it with great success in competitions...
Anybody else use this move? Any comments?
I found this vid where another dude taps

and this other guy couldn't really get it to work...

and here's sub 101

I watched the first and third video. What I noticed is that bottom guy has to destroy top guy's posture to make this work. The more skilled your opponent, the harder this will be to accomplish.
If someone locks their legs that high on my back, I know I have to posture up or hit combat base immediately or I will be broken down. How high his legs are on my torso and how far off to the side he is dictates my response.
In the last video you can see at approximately 1:13 how he uses his elbows to bend outward the inside of top guy's elbows and break his posture enough to link arms behind his feet. In this video, this is the final step in achieving the position necessary to perform the submission.

Geeza (purple belt) in competition. We call it the "jackpot", lol. He made the dude puke.
Our coach gets a kick out of it.
Interesting I'll have to give it a try to discourage those who try to smother me in guard. I noticed in the last video that when they showed doesn't work on all body types he wasn't over the arms that time. I'm guessing that makes a difference.
Depends on your legs too, I guess? I've done it on bigger guys. I'm 5'8", did it on ~6' guys. But I do a lot of Glute-Ham-Raises too. Try it out maybe?

Where does the pressure come from? Arms or legs or is it it a push/pull thing?
I think you are absolutely correct! I didn't resist him breaking my posture when I got tapped... I went with him to set up the ezekiel before my ribs got crunched...

My old Judo coach told me people have been badly injured (ruptured organs and broken ribs) with this move so be careful.
