My brother has been out of work for about 6 months. He started playing WOW and you'd think he was the CEO of some blue chip company. He talks of these missions he runs with his crew like a general in the army. Any port in a storm, I guess, there's worse things he can be doing.

When you are out of work for a long time, you begin to feel "worthless." Happens. It is very easy to get lost in something like WoW because it feels like you are accomplishing something, and making a difference. There is even an "earning money" element to it. Guilds "need" you to accomplish "missions," and a sense of "self-worth" comes out of that.
Problem is, its an illusion. That seems obvious, but it isn't when you are looking for any success to define you. Can it be bad? Yes. Can it be good? Yes.
The key is not to become lost in illusion and to have balance."Out of every hundred men, ten shouldn't even be there, eighty are just targets, nine are the real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle. Ah, but the one, one is a warrior, and he will bring the others back." -- Hericletus, circa 500 BC
