So you used a picture from a weigh in, prior to re-hydration, to make an even worse point?

If you want to fight on the ground you should make sure you can take your opponent down. This fight reminds me of Rolles Gracie's UFC debut.

Aoki actually impressed me a bit. There were at least three occasions where I thought he was going to look for an out via dq.

Are you saying that you were impressed that Aoki decided not to cheat?

Uh, just how much body fat do you think Melendez packed on between weigh-in and the fight? Because you're calling a guy with clearly-defined abs

Look, my question was really fucking simple.

Two numbers, that's all I'm asking for - no opinion required. Either pounds or kilograms would be fine.

    Yes.
Aoki has a bit of a reputation as looking for easy outs. It may not be wholly deserved but it also is not completely baseless.

    Russ,

Yes I, as a gigantic fat man, am indeed suggesting that for a pro fighter at 155 Melendez is on the pudgier end of things.

I'd have to disagree. This is just a case where good striking + wrestling and sub defense and excellent use of the cage trumped Aoki's Guard or a passive Guard.

He didn't throw up much in the way of offensive from his Guard in that fight. All I saw one a submission thrown up here and there. Not real attempts to chain multiple submission attempts together and no real attempt at any sweeps. There also where no attempts to to chain the two together. Didn't see any Half Guard work either.

I also feel that, if Aoki relies so heavily on his "magic pants" for his Guard, he should have taken a page from George Sotiropoulos' playbook and fought with some over-sized knee and ankle sleeves on for extra grip.

That's fascinating. Now, do you have any information about how much they weighed when they entered the ring?

No and I don't really care. I find it laughable to even entertain the discussion that Melendez had any sort of size advantage. Strength, probably; but that's Aoki's fault.

    http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2009/4/4/...igh-in-results

So for DREAM 8 in April '09, he weighed in at 73.5kg/161.7 lbs.

That'd be a seven pound cut. If Melendez didn't cut at least twice that, I'd be stunned.
