"That loss of tradition brings the loss of discipline"

    NOPE.

What what did all the judo clips at the beginning have to do with the rest of the vid? The ignorance in that video was... INSANE.

While the belt with the white stripe was used in the past, it isn't anymore. It meant the person did NOT compete, and their rank was a non-combative rank...

...hmmm, perhaps we need to bring that back.

Glad that girl's mother is happy that the girl with no skills has confidence in her untested skills and enough confidence that she never needs to test her skills.

Man, I'm not sure I would condone kids under 18 fighting either, especially in a cage, but its not like its a choice between all out no holds barred cage fighting, and never even engaging in controlled sparring. One day that girl is going to try to defend herself and get flattened.

One of the girls in my judo dojo has a black belt with a white sriple. She got her black belt in Japan and I was told or heard from someone that girls get the black belt with the white stripe.

Yep. I don't think that they are allowed to wear them for international competitions though...regardless a lot of girl shodans that I have seen have the stripe.

Yeah, I watch Olympic clips, and its just a solid black. I think its a a japanese thing, since their society ( I KNOW IM GENERALIZING ) is a little more sexist than the west.

What do we need to bring back?

    Specific female grades.
Naturally discrimination extended to the award of grades. A female belt
could not have the same value as a male belt, female belts were in general distinguished with a white stripe along their length. Even nowadays this discrimination is seen in Japan. At the time many females considered this detail truly discriminating.

    Sigh....

Obviously the idea of making people who do NOT compete wear a white stripe on their belt. It had nothing to do with women.

In point of fact, NO ONE uses the white stripe thing any more, except a few silly schools over here. The Kodokan doesn't use them now.

However, the LEGITIMATE purpose of the white stripe was that it was "lesser" because the person wearing it DID NOT DO SHIAI.

In as much as that has changed, it is no longer in use.

It had everything to do with women.

But it seems you want it back.

No, the purpose of the belt with a white stripe was it was lesser because the person wearing it was a woman, and women were not allowed to engage in shiai.

And you don't need to shout.

Yes, it used to, but that's not what he's talking about now.
