A tomahawk's something that I'd keep in/on a ruck or assault pack. Depending on the unit, walking around with it strapped to your leg or chest rig can mark you as "that guy".

For sure. I keep mine on my assault pack.

I was surprised by the amount of trees and greenery in Afghanistan and used mine a surprising amount for chopping ****. Military issue machettes are garbage. Some dudes can pull **** like that off others look like idiots.

Case in point a young private who thought it was cool to have a boot knife, large knife hanging of his hip, large knife lateral across the small of his back, a knife strapped upside down off his left arm/shoulder and a bayonet.
At that point his squad leader needs a shake.

Smack his squad leader so hard he feels it. His leadership has let him become "that guy".

Military issue stuff can take a good edge if you know what you're doing. Once in Iraq, when I was bored and had some down time, I hand-sharpened the axe from the HMMWV's tool rack to the point that it would cleanly shave hair from my arm. That got me some strange looks, but my squad leader loved it and laughed his ass off.

I usually have a multitool and folding knife on me at all times in uniform. On deployment I keep a medium fixed blade on my belt and one on my armor. Anything big stays in the assault pack.

Didn't carry one, we were mounted most of the time. Most I usually carried on my back was a Camelbak. My pack usually had extra water or whatever, and was in the vehicle.

And Moose...no. Just, no. I've heard of guys having wakizashi-sized blades in theater, but neither of us are in THOSE units.
