I ran a submission only grappling event in NY recently.
I was looking into running a knockdown karate tournament and a pankration tournament as well.
Do you think there would be interest in a no time limit knockdown event? Just the first to score an Ippon?(which would be a clear knockdown from a strike or 2 sweeps/throws)
Any ideas, thoughts??

You could end up with some long matches if both guys gas.

I'd come pay to watch it if it was accesible by subway or LIRR (I live in Brooklyn, no car), although I wouldn't be competing in it anytime soon.

You'll end up with some really boring matches where people run away for 10 minutes or both fighters gas, start throwing arm punches and can't hurt the other person. This already happens in many matches but the time runs out and the judges score it.
Its quite rare to see matches in the lower levels go the two extension rounds here, the ruleset pretty much makes you go for the knockdown and not care about points. Maybe go one 5 minute round with it automatically made a draw if it goes the distance?
"Boxing is the art of hitting an opponent from the furthest distance away, exposing the least amount of your body while getting into position to punch with maximum leverage and not getting hit."

This is what they do for the pankration league here and it works out well.

No Time limit ? What kyokushin you do IKO1,2 or what ??
And what do you mean with No time limit, I really don't get it ?
Just imagine if it is like Silva vs Maia, how long the time to end the match ?

Two 2 minute rds, 1 rd OT for ties. Throws = 2 points, sweeps = 1 point, knockdowns = 3 points.
With one minute breaks that's 9 minutes, you can figure fifteen minutes a match from beggining to end. Keeps it moving.
I'd probably sign up for something like that if you had a 45+ division.

Bad idea, you either have the guys gas to the point where they cannot KO each other.....
Or you have everyone KO'ing each other all day.
Full Contact Karate is brutal on the body IMO, and lengthening the time of the match will only add more injuries, making for a bad experience for cometitors and the likelihood of people having to drop out of the tourney sky rocket.
