Good job. I doubt it's going to wake anybody up though. Post again if they show up to your school.

For Short Kata #3 you should have demanded they blast "Play that Funky Music, White Boy" during the performance.

There's point and break a la Karate Kid

There's continuous point sparring with no breaks or limited breaks in the action

Point sparring rulesets also vary in the amount of contact allowed--whether full, full with "control", or light--as well as whether they allow facepunching and/or leg kicks and/or sweeps.

Ah ok. I always assumed point sparring was pretty basic and that there isn't a large amount of full contact.

Yeah on Saturday we were doing point and break like karate kid. Light contact to the body, no contact to the head. No face strikes allowed unless both people had face shields. The traditional idea for a point at our school was the strike had to be significant enough to give you an advantage in real fight, i.e. a blow that would theorethical stumble or injure your opponent.

The strange thing on Saturday was leg kicks were legal, and worth points. I every other tournament I've ever fought it, if leg kicks and sweeps were allowed they weren't worth points, they were basically set up moves.

So like any good competitor I adjusted to the rules and kicked the crap out of my opponents legs. I was landing and landing hard, but I wasn't getting any points. Then the head ref said my kicks "were too sloppy" and I had to use "proper form" and snap my leg back to a chambered position. So I made an adjustment again and started scoring point after point.

Bad news, my kicks no longer had any power and lost the ability to injure my opponents altogether, but that didn't matter because we were playing tag.

That's very weird, leg kicks are allowed in Shorin Ryu but they don't award points for them, just hockey the legs off someone then gyaku tzuki to the face, which is allowed for senior grades.
