60% of the Belgians are native Flemish speaking, luckily 90% of the Flemish speak also French.
40% of the Belgians are native French speaking, yet only 5% of them speak Flemish as a second language.
It's been a major problem in this country since it's creation in 1830 and it will stay a major problem thanks to the politicians who **** over the people and just want to stay in power (on both sides of the language barrier).

From 1830 upto 1990, the only official language was French.
From 1990 the official languages are French and Dutch.
Yet we speak Flemish (an official Dutch sublanguage, not a dialect) and Walloon (an official French sublanguage, also not a dialect).
You can compaire it to "American" English and "British" English. While both languages came from the same language, they evolved enough that they could be called to different languages (example: lorry <-> truck ; trousers <-> pants ; elevator <-> lift).
Flemish evolved from Dutch to it's interaction with French and Walloon evolved from French to it's interaction with Dutch.
