    The Academy of Martial Studies

I am not much for words, but this place is doing great things for soldiers. The training is real and effective. I love the "BS Flag's" Any time anyone wants to throw a BS Flag they can! As a matter of fact they some times trow out crappy techniques to make sure people are paying attention. The fitness and conditioning is one of the best (Student Broke US Army PT record!). Go see for yourself. I do wish they had more room... and a closer shoot house. They do how ever have partnerships with other military trainers (Shooting, Driving) and add that into training. If you are looking for realistic military training this is the place, experience is abundant and theory is developed from experience not the other way around.

    Cool Stuff:
AirSoft, Shock Knife, IED's, 3 or 5 on 1, Scenario Based...

Under "Adult MMA" : The majority of the techniques come from the Chinese martial arts; a combination of Tai Chi and other Southern Chinese Style martial arts that have been tested in combat over the millennia.

    What???

Also, they make no mention of their grappling instruction. Your ratings are unbelievably high, I would STRONGLY recommend you go back and read what an 8, or 9, means and reevaluate your ranking.

I also think I saw a Mook Jong in one of the photos.
I do not aspire to be great, or even good, I hope to suck a little less then last class.

In the Urban combat page, there's a Chinese shrine, typical in CMA schools.

I understand, but still, a Mook in a "MMA" "Military Combat" school just rubs me the wrong way.

You got the name of the school wrong in your title.

The website says the name of the schools is "The Academy of Martial Studies" not "The Academy of Martial Science".

Since you gave them such a glowing review, I'm sure they would appreciate you getting their name right.

I'd just call BS on this, but there's a lot of confusing and contradictory info on their website. In their "misconceptions" article, they're dismissive of teaching grappling:

Striking is entirely more effective than ground-fighting in the combatives environment.
    There are also gems like:

In addition, we’re fully aware that when our soldiers deploy to a foreign country, they’re already outnumbered. So being trained to handle multiple attackers is a must.
    and:

When threat becomes reality, grappling on the ground like a high school wrestler following scripted moves is the last place a combat-ready soldier wants to be.
To be fair, no, in a combat situation you don't want to be on the ground wrestling, but ideally don't you avoid this through firearm use and not powerful CMA striking?

Yet on the website they list grappling instruction and MMA style sparring.

Its under the images in the multimedia. It looks like they are in some sports bar with a bunch of Army guys and they also have pics of Dan Mirgliotta (I think).

I'm stationed at Fort Bragg, and I've had the "opportunity" to "train" with some of their instructors. I'm not very good at BJJ, but I felt like I was better than the guys I rolled with. There are several crappy martial arts schools around Fort Bragg, with so-called instructors ready to take people's money. I don't know about the training they do in their school, but if their stand-up is on the same level as their grappling, I wouldn't go there.
