On the battlefied, it was very disadvantageous to be thrown on your back because then you can't draw your weapon. I do remember reading a book at borders where a technique was shown: Two samurai, in full armor, Katana drawn. Samurai A drops to buttscooting and scissor sweeps Samurai B's leg.
