This person was also the All Service champion which means he would have to have beaten the Air Force, Marine, and Navy champions to become "All Service"

He also won a gold medal at the Melbourne Olympics. Being a military champion in the 50's meant you were on or very close to being on the Olympic team. In fact 5 of the boxers were in the service during the 56 Olympics.

Being an undefeated and Air Force Champion would have been something pretty special.
IIRC the Armed Forces champion automatically gets a spot on the Olympic team. Not sure if that was true in the 50's. If JD went to the championships there is probably a record of it somewhere.

One odd thing I noticed is that DeMile was 20 when he met BL in 1959. I don't see how one can have done their 4 years and be out of the service at 20. I know its possible to sign up for less than 4 years of active duty today, but I doubt that deal existed back then. Possible, but I'd be surprised.

I found an article that said Demile was born in 1935 and that he met Lee in 1959 which would have made him 24 when he met Lee. I've only seen that Demile was discharged from the Air Force so I don't want to convey that he was anything else but honorably discharged without proof to the contrary.

Do you have a link to where he said he met Lee when he was 20?

I just don't see how anyone with his stated record and championship status wouldn't have been well known or at least tried to turn pro. Trainers would have been all over him.

In fact the fighter I referenced earlier fought Floyd Patterson for the HW championship in his first professional fight after the Olympics.

It wasn't uncommon for people to join the military before 18 back then so either he joined at an early age or was discharged early. I'm not going to insinuate anything about the discourse his discharge just using it as a time reference for when he was an active fighter and two year champion of the Air Force.

    Thanks for the link.

According to this article he met Lee in 1959. My research finds that a James W Demile (of Hawaii) was born in 1938 but I did also find a Jim W Demile in Seattle who was born in 1936.

Unless there are some semantics I am overlooking he is actually claiming to be the Air Force HW boxing champion. You would think he would clarify this to interviewers.

In his defense I guess it is possible that he doesn't realize people are saying this.

One of the links I provided is a quote from a student who he passed on his style to. So if anyone would have the proper info you would think it would be him.

Okay but what year are you using for the HW champion title?

He was born in 1936. In an article in the Ottawa Citizen it is stated he was 49yo in 1985. See this LINK.
